A true treasure cultivated in Polynesian oysters (called Pinctada Margaritifera), the Tahitian pearl is renowned for its rarity, prestige and incomparable beauty.

The true pearl ("Poe Rava" in Polynesian) is created by a living organism, and therefore possesses its own DNA. It is unique and there is no like it.
Because of its rarity and high value, some imitation products are shamelessly put on the market by manufacturers who, in order to maximize their profits, try to pass them off as genuine.
These fake pearls (usually made of ceramic, glass, plastic or other composites), artificially colored and varnished, are perfect lures for our eyes.
To recognize a Genuine Tahitian Pearl, several criteria must be evaluated.
Its Name
It must be clear and precise, such as "Tahitian Pearl", "Genuine Tahitian Pearl", "Black Tahitian Pearl".
Its Density, Weight and Temperature
A real pearl will always be denser, heavier, and cooler than a fake one. By holding the pearl in the palm of your hand, you can assess these three criteria. Note that a glass pearl will pass this test.
Its Surface Imperfection Rate,
its Shape, its Size, its Luster and its Color
These criteria allow it to be selected and categorized.
A pearl that falls into the "high quality" category is one with the fewest visible flaws (but it always has some; nature is never perfect). Rejoice if you find a few.
Its Luster and its Orient
Like a mirror, its surface must perfectly reflect the light; that is its shine (like a piece of jewelry that has been polished to a mirror finish).
Like in a reflection of a soap bubble or a prism, its orientation must allow it to orient its colors differently (therefore changing hue), depending on the light that passes through it.
Orient is the reflection of light through the different layers of nacre that make up the pearl, also called aragonite crystals. The thinner and more numerous the layers, the greater the pearl's orient.
Nature offers it a wide range of very colorful shades, from dark grey to silver, from intense green to peacock green, including aubergine, pink, dark blue or light blue, champagne or even intense yellow.
Whatever its color, it must vary according to the light to which it is exposed.
Be wary, however, as some "good" imitations produce these luster effects. Color-changing effects, on the other hand, are more difficult to imitate .
Its Imperfect Round Shape
There are various shapes of Tahitian pearls. The most well-known shapes are: circled, baroque, teardrop, button, almost round, and round.
A pearl categorized as "round" will never be perfectly round (remember, natural is never perfect).
If your pearl is round, measure it with calipers. If its measurements indicate a perfect sphere, its authenticity is questionable.
Its composition is thick mother-of-pearl
It guarantees the Veracity, Quality and Durability of the pearl.
To check its authenticity, you can perform the "tooth test" ( be careful not to hurt yourself or damage your tooth) : gently rub the pearl against your tooth enamel. If you feel a rough texture, the pearl is genuine. However, if you feel a smooth, slippery texture, the pearl is fake.
The foolproof method, however, is to call in a professional. They are equipped with specific machines, such as microscopes, X-ray machines, and refractometers.
