The sea turtle and its symbolism
The sea turtle, known as "honu" in several Pacific languages, symbolises longevity, protection and wisdom in many Pacific cultures. It connects the land, the ocean and the journey. It is this calm strength that gave Honu Handmade Jewellery its name.
The Polynesian turtle, a symbol of longevity and resilience
The turtle, known as honu in Polynesian, is a marine animal, but also and above all a sacred symbol that spans legends and generations, a messenger of protection, longevity and wisdom. It is this ancient and revered creature that directly inspires the world and creations of Honu Handmade Jewellery. A brand is also a story, and mine begins with this turtle.

A universal symbol, with a special place in Polynesia
The turtle features in many traditions across the world, but in Polynesia, it holds a unique place. It is not just one sacred animal among many. It is a messenger, a guide, a spiritual companion.
Legends tell that it is the messenger between the earthly world and the realm of the gods, capable of travelling great distances and guiding souls to their destination. It crosses the ocean with quiet confidence, which in Polynesia, where the ocean is ever-present and powerful, is no small feat. It represents the ability to navigate the unknown with serenity.
It is associated with stability and resilience, thanks to its solid shell that protects it from hardship. This natural armour symbolises protection, but also the ability to withdraw into oneself when necessary. It also evokes peace and a deliberate slowness, the kind that allows one to reach one’s goal without rushing. In a world where everything moves too fast, the turtle reminds us that sometimes, slowness is not a weakness. It is wisdom.
The legend of Honu and the first navigators
According to a deeply rooted Polynesian legend, the Honu turtle is said to have guided the first navigators across the Pacific. It is said to have shown them the currents, the stars and the shores. In an era when navigational instruments did not exist, only knowledge of nature could guide the explorers. The turtle, a sea creature that understands the ocean, was therefore a natural guide.
For the ancient Polynesians, encountering a turtle at sea was never a trivial event but a sign of good fortune and divine protection. It meant that one was on the right path and that the gods were watching over them. Even today, traditional tattoos depicting the honu are worn as protective symbols against danger. Complex geometric patterns tell stories through body language, and each element has a specific meaning.
Why does Honu inspire my creations?

At Honu, given what it represents and its symbolism, the leatherback turtle is at the heart of my identity as a designer.
It reflects the strength and durability I wish to convey in every piece of jewellery I craft. When I work with solid silver, when I attach a Tahitian pearl to my creation, I think of that shell, that quiet strength, that patience and, above all, that resilience which characterise it.
I want my jewellery to possess this same quality: the ability to stand the test of time, to endure life’s trials, and to remain dignified and beautiful even after many years.
It also symbolises my attachment to nature and its mysteries, which constantly fuel my inspiration. Every pearl I use comes from the Polynesian ocean. Every curve I engrave in silver is inspired by natural forms, by organic life. I reject industrial moulds precisely because I seek to maintain this connection with the living world. The turtle, particularly the leatherback turtle, reminds me that true creations stem from observation, respect and active slowness.
Ultimately, it also inspires travel and the passing on of traditions. A piece of jewellery forged by hand is a lasting piece because it accompanies a lifetime and is passed down from generation to generation. Take a look behind the scenes of the workshop where each piece comes to life. Just as the turtle guides us through the ocean, a piece of Honu jewellery guides us through time.
That is why wearing a Honu piece of jewellery also means embracing this philosophy: slowness, durability, respect for nature, and the passing on of traditions.
Honu: the name and its meaning in Polynesian
In Reo Tahiti (the Tahitian language), honu refers to the sea turtle. This name is used throughout French Polynesia, from the Marquesas to the Tuamotu Islands.
It is this word that I chose for my brand. A word that has existed for centuries, embodying longevity, protection and the journey.
Honu Handmade Jewellery embodies this idea in jewellery: pieces that stand the test of time, crafted with the same patience as that of the turtle crossing the oceans.
